$19 Million Project at Yellow Bar Hassock

1. Infilling

About 375,000 cubic yards of sand dredged from the New York-New Jersey Harbor (taken from the deepening of the Ambrose Channel) was carried to Jamaica Bay. The sediment was mixed with water and pumped through a dredge pipe and then piled high on the remaining stretch of Yellow Bar.

2. Regrading

Bulldozers came and graded the land with precision and mindfulness.  GPS units were used to determine the exact location where to push the sand. If the sand is not leveled to the perfect altitude, invasive species like phragmites can root on the island, killing indigenous species.

3. Replanting

Native plants, some grown in a greenhouse and some growing in the area, were planted on the island.
